Restarting your career in a new market

Moving to a new country can be scary and exciting at the same time, especially when it involves finding a new job or starting a new career. So, what can you do to jumpstart your dream career when you’ve arrived in a new country?  Here are some tips to help you make headway in the country you have moved to and set you up for future career success.

Brush up on the right skills

Your prep should start even before you move. Do a quick job market research to find out which industries are currently in demand for employees in your new country of residence. You can then direct your focus and energy to brushing up on skills that will help you secure the job.

Get a local degree

This applies especially to professionals in fields like medicine, law or banking. Your existing university degree may not necessarily hold up in the new country you’ve moved to. This could be due to differences in government regulations and legislation, or simply the way business is done. A local education can be beneficial and even taking a few extra courses can go that extra mile and help open doors for you.

Build your network

Networking is especially important when starting a new career in a new country. Reach out to your friends or alumni who may be able to put you in touch with someone based in that country. Don’t know anyone? Get in touch with a recruiter from a global recruitment firm who can help you get in front of potential employers. Lastly, don’t forget to attend industry events, conferences, seminars and trade shows so you can meet new people.

Settling your finances

Dealing with tax implications, how you’ll be paid and how you’ll get access to your funds is always complicated and cumbersome. Do your research on tax laws and banking services available, so you can avoid any extra costs and running into complications when getting your money.

Hone your language skills

While speaking English might be enough for you to get by, it’s always important to learn the native tongue of your new home country. This allows you to understand local idiosyncracies and get used to the way of life, as well as help you better understand the work culture.

Embrace change

Restarting your career in a new environment always requires some adjustment. Things may be done differently from what you’re acustomed to back at home, and you may not have all the answers, no matter how skilled or experienced you are. Therefore, the most important quality that will help you succeed in your new career is an open mind.
